Georgia AD puts the SEC on fire with a 4 a.m. tweet that caught everyone’s attention

Most of the time, sending a tweet at 4:06 am is a bad decision. But University of Georgia athletic director Josh Brooks did just that and likely didn’t regret it the next morning, as his statement condemning the reversal of the call in Saturday’s Texas-Georgia game was well-articulated without being spiteful toward the referees. who made the call. on the field or in the conference as a whole.

Brooks began the statement by saying he wants to defend “the entire Dawg Nation,” and he really did a good job of that here. Georgia was the victim of one of the strangest calls in recent memory on Saturday night against Texas, when a Texas defensive pass interference call was overturned after Texas students threw bottles and debris onto the field during the second quarter.

According to the SEC’s statement Sunday morning, the nullification of the call had nothing to do with the students throwing debris. Many fans – and Brooks – questioned whether that statement was true or whether the SEC was just refusing to admit that a call was changed because of fan influence.

In response to the SEC, Brooks tweeted: “The official claimed he made a mistake on the call. My question is when did he realize the error? If it was before the delay that occurred due to fans throwing objects onto the field, what stopped him before the head referee did the ad and spotted the ball?”

He’s right! Even if the referees did just that — grabbed the flag before calling the pass interference and handed the ball to Texas — it would have generated controversy, but nowhere near the outcry we’re seeing now. Also, referees picking up flags is normal; referees deciding to change a non-reviewable decision is not normal, and that is what happened on Saturday.

It’s never a good sign when the number one team in the country is upset, but the biggest story to come out of the game involves the referees and a statement from the conference. The Bulldogs will likely jump to No. 2 in the country after this win, which was Kirby Smart’s 100th as Georgia’s head coach.
