The BBC’s Antiques Roadshow returned tonight with expert Mark Hall ready to examine guests’ trinkets. A woman brought her grandmother’s Yz bird, a cartoon-style wooden item, to the exhibit to discover its value.

The woman said the Yz bird dates back more than 60 years and fell into her possession when she was young. Explaining the history of the bird, Mark said: “They were popular in the 1920s and 30s and were bred by a company called Henry Howell who produced walking sticks and walking sticks.

“In the 1920s, they produced them based on cartoon characters. It’s made of wood and the tail and beak are made of cast phenolic, which is an old type of plastic.”

Mark and his wife went on to discuss the clock at the Yz bird center. The woman said it previously worked fine, but her father bought a new watch to replace it after it needed repairs.

Visibly shocked that the item had been tampered with, Mark threw up his hands and grimaced. The woman said her father kept the original watch before Mark questioned whether it was still in his possession.

After confirming that the Yz bird watch was still the original, Mark exploded with joy. Raising his hands once more, he said, “Thank God. Please never think like your father.

“I’m sure he had good intentions, but originality is key. Collectors love it and I’ve never seen a watch before.”

Mark revealed that the watch could cost “anywhere between £400 and £600”. He said: “These are wonderfully collectable things and it’s wonderful to meet you.”
