Person hit by train causes major disruption to services

A person was hit by a train causing “major disruption” to services. Emergency services are responding this morning, Monday 21st October, following the incident which occurred between Manchester Oxford Road and Warrington at around 7am.

All stations between Manchester Oxford Road and Warrington are closed while crews deal with the incident. Trains are currently being cancelled, delayed by up to an hour or diverted, reports the Manchester Evening News.


Major disruptions are expected until at least 9am, according to rail operators. Affected services include East Midlands Railway, Northern and TransPennine Express and passengers are encouraged to check before traveling this morning.

National Rail said: “A person was hit by a train between Manchester Oxford Road and Warrington Central. While emergency services carry out their work, all lines between these stations are closed. Trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or diverted until approximately 09:00.”


British Transport Police have been contacted for further information. Below is advice for passengers whose train service has been affected by the incident.

Advice for Northern passengers:

Trains are currently suspended between Manchester Oxford Road and Warrington Central. To help with your journey, you can use your ticket on alternative Northern services between Manchester Piccadilly/Manchester Oxford Road and Liverpool via any reasonable route. Ticket restrictions have been lifted during this disruption.

Road transport has been asked to run between Manchester Oxford Road and Warrington Central. More details will be provided once this is confirmed.


Advice for TransPennine Express passengers:

Trains will divert between Manchester Oxford Road and Liverpool Lime Street where possible and will not call at Urmston, Irlam, Birchwood, Warrington Central and Liverpool South Parkway.

To make your trip easier, you can use your ticket for the following services:

  • East Midlands Rail services between Liverpool Lime Street and Sheffield
  • Northern services between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield
  • Alternative TransPennine Express services between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Victoria
  • Metrolink services between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Victoria


Replacement road transport was requested to operate from Liverpool Lime Street, calling at all intermediate stations to Manchester Piccadilly in both directions. Consult the station staff for collection points.

Advice for East Midlands rail passengers:

To make your trip easier, you can use your ticket for the following services:

  • TransPennine Express between Liverpool Lime Street and Sheffiled
  • Northern services between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield
  • North between Warrington Bank Quay and Manchester Victoria
