This is the gaming projector I would buy this Black Friday – and it's already at a record price

This might be the first year I seriously consider buying my own gaming projector. With the holiday sales just around the corner, I’ve been keeping a close eye on the prices of some of my favorite releases of the year — and there’s one I keep coming back to. I first reviewed the BenQ X300G back in May and was so impressed with it that I’ve been watching its price cuts like a hawk. Well, it just hit a new record, and beating that on Black Friday could be tricky.

Amazon currently has the $1,799 (at launch) short-throw projector available for just $1,299. That’s a full $500 off the launch price, a fee that was only recently spotted in September. Despite being one of the best gaming projectors on the market today, the BenQ X300G has been dropping in price for some time. This means you’ll be very unlucky if you come across that full MSRP in everyday life – but the compact device is usually found for between $1,400 and $1,500. Last month I was celebrating the record low of $1,499, and now we’re $200 cheaper.

It’s clear that official sales are approaching with this year’s Black Friday projector deals scheduled for November 29th. Although there are still six weeks to go, I would only expect to see another $100 off this final price later in the year. Don’t get me wrong, anything can happen on Black Friday, but considering that older alternatives in BenQ’s gaming lineup usually go for $1,099, I’m not expecting a triple-digit sale price this year. I’d be surprised if the BenQ X300G dropped to $1,099 for Black Friday, considering this is the device’s first year on the market, so today’s deal is an early steal.

Should you buy the BenQ X300G?

There’s one gamer the BenQ X300G is perfect for, and it happens to be me. I play with a PS5 in one room, a Nintendo Switch in another, and an Asus ROG Ally wherever I’ve placed it. The compact design, short-throw lens, and easy setup process mean the X300G can essentially follow me around the house, setting up where I need it and displaying its image in a matter of minutes. This is the use case where the device shined during my testing (especially since it can run and charge a gaming laptop via a single USB-C cable). This 4K image is also impressive, with vibrant colors (especially in more cartoon-style projects), sharp details and a very bright image when playing in a darker room. Its HDR compatibility makes for wonderful gameplay and streaming (when supported), and its dual 8W speakers are also surprisingly powerful for such a small chassis.

There is a but here. If you’d rather invest more money in a high-end 4K picture (and less in extra features), the BenQ X3100i might be the better option. It’s a more expensive projector (currently on sale for $2,199 on Amazon), but it handles ambient lighting better and offers better overall color contrast. However, these are small improvements to the big picture that discerning eyes can notice. If you want your games on an even bigger screen and need a flexible device that isn’t just limited to the living room, the X300G is still your choice.
