The Maui County Department of Parks and Recreation is sponsoring a series of five adult learn-to-swim classes that will be offered free of charge throughout the month of November at the Upcountry Pool in Pukalani.

The free classes will be taught by Maui Masters Swim Club volunteers, including certified instructors for adults to learn to swim. Classes will take place in a heated pool, from 8:30 am to 9:30 am, on five Saturdays – 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 November.

“More than a third of adults in the United States cannot swim the entire length of a pool, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, putting them at risk of being one of the 10 people who drown every day.” in this country”, said Anne Rillero, president of the Maui Masters Swim Club. “We are not born knowing how to swim. It’s a skill we need to learn.”

“Maui adults who were not taught as children will now have the opportunity to learn to swim in a safe and supportive program with a ratio of 1 instructor for every 2-3 swimmers in the Upcountry heated pool,” Rillero says. “Our instructors and volunteers will be in the water with you and work with you wherever you are – even if you are setting foot in the pool for the first time.”

“We are grateful to the Maui County Parks and Recreation Department for sponsoring this free program for adults in our community. Swimming is an important skill for Maui residents, as many gatherings of family and friends take place at the beach and pool, and water sports are very popular,” Rillero says.

Thanks to a grant from the USA Swimming Foundation awarded to the Maui Masters Swim Club, the US Masters Swimming Learn to Swim Adult Instructor Certification Program was offered free of charge in September to coaches and swimmers throughout Hawaii. The Instructor Certification program educates swim instructors in the methods and techniques that work best for adult students.

Class sizes will be limited and participants must attend five classes on Saturday. To sign up for the free Adult Learn to Swim program, visit https://bit.ly/AdultSwimClass and sign up before October 28th.
