Angry Mob Attack on Omaha Woman Caught on Camera

Angry Mob Attack on Omaha Woman Caught on Camera

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A mob whipped into a frenzy by what appears to be an older teenage girl attacked a 55-year-old woman in Omaha Saturday night.

“They grabbed me by the hair and there were a lot of people,” said Chris, the victim who asked that his last name be withheld. “I knew if they threw me on the ground I would be beaten, if I was going to survive that.”

As 6 News first reported on Monday, Chris’ car also suffered blows from kicks that caused dents.

“Seeing that kid walk past my windshield and hearing them cheer, it makes me sick,” Chris said.

Chris says she only came to the parking lot because the 911 dispatcher asked for an address, so she drove until she picked one up at the building. The Douglas County 911 director told 6 News a dispatcher would never have told Chris to go there.

“All I was trying to do was report it to the police so they could come and deal with this mob of kids,” Chris said.

But social media posts show some in the crowd urging others to come after Chris with words, then hands, then fists.

Chris was unable to call to report an assault because someone in the crowd took her phone while she was calling 911. Communications say a dispatcher called her cell phone number back and got no answer. After leaving the parking lot, Chris returned home to call 911 and report the attack.

“It’s unbelievable,” said Douglas County Sheriff Aaron Hanson. “In retrospect, never be in that crowd. Keep your distance. But if you find yourself in a crowd, it still doesn’t mean that you have lost the right to be safe and that people would gain the right to attack you as a mob. This is unacceptable.”

Hanson says the video and evidence collected from Chris’ car will be forwarded to the Omaha Police, who will lead the investigation.

“They deserve to be in prison,” Chris said. “My wounds will heal. My mental health, I still don’t know.”

Chris recovered her cell phone from someone who was there and the video she recorded of the crowd leading up to the attack will not be erased from her memory.

“I can hear them yelling, ‘Get her,’” Chris said.

6 News contacted an Omaha Police captain who said he would review officers’ dispatch and arrival times. The captain also says he will work with the church and neighboring businesses to make parking off limits to unruly late-night crowds.
