UHS Now Offers Incisionless, Focused Ultrasound Treatment for Essential Tremor Patients

BINGHAMTON (WBNG) – United Health Services announced the launch of its Focused Ultrasound Program to treat essential tremor, a movement disorder.

UHS said the disorder is common and affects about 10 million Americans.

UHS described the program as incision-free and minimally invasive. It uses MRI-guided ultrasound energy to target and treat the area of the brain that is the origin of the tumor.

Simone Betchen, MD, MBA, FACS, FAANS, Chief of Neurosciences and assistant neurosurgeon at UHS, called the new program a great opportunity for people living with essential tremors to improve their lives.

“Essential tremor can be an increasingly debilitating condition to live with, and I am pleased that UHS can bring focused ultrasound to patients in the region,” Betchen said. “This minimally invasive treatment can offer immediate improvement in patients’ hand tremor, and studies show that improvement is sustained for years after treatment.”

UHS said it is the first and only health system in New York State to use the latest iteration of this technology.

You can now schedule in-person and virtual appointments to screen for essential tremors and discuss treatment options.
