Kangaroo captured during ‘high speed’ chase

DURANGO, Colo. (KKTV/Gray News) – Officers in Colorado were tasked with something they likely never received training for: fighting a kangaroo.

On Wednesday, the Durango Police Department shared a video on Facebook of officers chasing the animal, which was caught jumping in the street.

“Did anyone go for a night run at Cold Stone?” the department joked.

According to the department, its officers Preskorn, Walters and Hamer were involved in the “high-speed” chase.

In body camera footage dated September 18, one of the officers can be heard laughing as they determine the best way to capture the red kangaroo.

Later in the video, the kangaroo can be seen cradled in someone’s arms. Police said the animal was later returned to its owners.

“Don’t worry, the long-legged friend has been released to his owner… and we are seriously reconsidering the cardio,” the department said. “Who knew kangaroo wrestling was part of the job?”

According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, it is legal to own a red kangaroo in Colorado.
