‘Placing your bed close to a radiator means you will feel hotter when the heating is on, but you should always try to avoid placing your bed directly in front of the radiator if possible. This will block the radiator and make it much less efficient at distributing heat throughout the room.

“There are other considerations about where to put your bed, including where your door is,” continues Jonathan. ‘Place your bed on the same wall as the door to make it easier to walk around the room. This will also have the advantage of protecting your head from any drafts that come in through the door during the night.

Magda Callery, interior designer and founder of Style by Magda, says positioning your bed is all about strategy – and using architecture to your advantage.

‘Think of it like planning a cozy fortress – where you place your bed can make all the difference between toasty comfort and waking up feeling like you’ve spent the night under a cold draft,’ she says.

‘The MVP of the bed placement is against an interior wall. Interior walls are like your bed’s personal bodyguards – they keep the heat in and the cold out. Leaning against one of them, you get the perfect balance between isolation and coziness.

“Interior walls are the warm embraces of architecture, helping your bed remain cozy by surrounding it with the warmth of the home’s interior.”

The worst place to position your bed

You’re probably wondering where the worst place to put a bed is. The answer is in your window – it’s not as insulating as the inside wall, you’ll definitely feel cold.

“During the winter months, windows are probably the coldest spot in the room, especially in older homes, which means you’ll feel a lot colder if your bed is close to one,” agrees Jonathan. “You should also try to avoid external walls whenever possible to ensure you’re minimizing their proximity to the coldest areas of the room.”

Magda also considers exterior walls to be the worst place to put a bed. ‘The worst place? This would be against an exterior wall or next to those giant windows (aka cold air’s favorite inlet),” she says.

‘External walls are the cold shoulder – literally. No matter how good the insulation is, exterior walls can escape the cold outside. So for maximum warmth, cling to your interior walls like your favorite winter blanket!

“Unless you’re trying to recreate an ‘outdoor camping’ experience in your own room, stay away from these cold zones!”
