Walnut tree cultivation workshop offered

Walnut tree cultivation workshop offered

PARIS – Join the Oxford County Soil and Water Conservation District on Wednesday, November 6 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm in Paris for a workshop on starting trees from seeds. There are many walnut trees that are hardy in the Northeast and can be easily grown in Maine. Nuts can provide a nutritious food source for people and a valuable food source for wildlife. Chestnuts, hazelnuts, hazelnuts, hickories, walnuts, black walnuts and many oaks can be grown from nut bearing trees and become nut-bearing trees in just 8 to 10 years, providing an alternative source of income in agricultural markets.

Join Michele Windsor, project manager for our Food Forest Project, to learn how to prepare nuts for germination and start your own walnut orchard. Participants will receive black walnuts and European chestnuts that they can use to start their own trees.

This event is free, but participants must register by visiting our website at oxfordcountyswcd.org/workshops. The registration deadline is Monday, November 4th. For more information, contact Chantelle Hay, Education and Outreach Coordinator, Oxford County Soil and Water Conservation District at [email protected] or 207-744-3111.
