A man wearing a Make America Great Again hat punched an elections clerk in San Antonio with his fists, according to a sheriff’s report.

Early voting began in Texas on Monday.

Police say 63-year-old Jesse Lutzenberger walked into a polling place Thursday wearing a MAGA hat in support of the former president Donald Trump. A 69-year-old election worker asked him to remove the hat because Texas law considers political messages at polling places illegal election activity. The worker asked Lutzenberg to remove the hat, and the voter complied. However, Lutzenberger put the hat back on and the worker came over and began to escort him away.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said Lutzenberger was then captured on surveillance camera “throwing an arm back at the victim.”

“The victim appeared to be pushing away from the suspect,” Salazar said said. “At that point, the suspect turned around and threw multiple punches directly into the victim’s face.”

The election worker’s injuries were not life-threatening and he was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel.

Lutzenberger was taken into custody at his home and released Friday on $30,000 bail.

Bexar County Police have responded to multiple calls about individuals wearing political clothing and supporting various candidates. Texas law prohibits political clothing within 100 feet of polling places.

More than 200,000 voters have cast ballots so far, according to a Bexar County election official.
