PM Wong has ‘great first meeting’ with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Commonwealth of Samoa summit – Mothership.SG

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong visited the Pacific island of Samoa from October 23 to 26, 2024.

This visit was his first time at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) as Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Wong called the summit a “special milestone” and added that he had forged stronger ties with his Commonwealth counterparts.

Among the colleagues he spoke about was British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who recently took up the post in July 2024.

Prime Minister Wong spoke on Facebook about his “amazing first meeting” with Starmer after on October 26, along with this photo:

“Our two countries share long-standing close ties, as well as a strategic partnership covering many key areas – including defence, sustainability, research and technology,” Prime Minister Wong wrote.

A press release from the The British Prime Minister’s office revealed that leaders had sat down to reflect on the success of the summit and the future of the Commonwealth.

They also reflected on the strong partnership between Britain and Singapore.

Starmer told Prime Minister Wong he was “delighted” that the Royal Navy’s Carrier Strike Group would visit the coast of Singapore in 2025.
