Family of woman murdered in Priceville speaks about her life

PRICEVILLE, Ala. (WAF) – The family of a woman shot in Priceville on Saturday is now honoring her life.

They reflect on Kimberly Ricks’ life as they try to help her three children cope.

Ricks’ aunt said she was nothing but a joy in their entire lives and that what happened to her was tragic.

Alicia Powe didn’t hesitate to describe the pain her family is feeling.

Her niece Kimberly Ricks died Sunday in a shooting outside a home on Langley Private Dr.

Ricks’ former husband, Zachary Merriman, is now charged with murder.

Powe says she never thought something like this would ever happen.

“It was a nightmare and something no family should ever have to experience,” Powe said.

Powe says Ricks and Merriman had ups and downs in their relationship. Ricks previously applied for a protective order, but it was denied.

“I just want every woman to look at this document and if you are in a domestic violence relationship, seek help,” Powe said. “I don’t want this to happen to anyone else because it’s not fair.”

Powe said Ricks was a kind, loving mother who worked hard to provide a happy and safe life for her children.

She says Ricks could always make her laugh and bring joy to everyone around her.

“She was just really kind and loved her babies with all her heart,” Powe said.

Powe says the family is doing what they can to cope.

“They are children playing and not burying their mothers,” Powe said.

The family hopes to raise awareness about domestic violence through Ricks’ story.

The family also has one GoFundMe to compensate for funeral costs.
