A man charged with the murder of his mother has been photographed for the first time after her body was found in a rural caravan park.

Callan Davidson, 29, was charged with murder on Friday after emergency services were called to a property on Henry Street, in Gunnedah, north-central NSW, about 8.20am.

Police found his mother Cheryl Davidson, believed to be in her 50s, seriously injured in a nearby tent before later dying at the scene.

Officers also found a man covered in blood.

Davidson, whose address is listed as the Gunnedah Tourist Caravan Park, was later arrested before being taken to Gunnedah Police Station.

He refused to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Saturday and his case has since been adjourned at Tamworth Local Court on Monday.

It is believed a court order has been issued informing NSW Justice Health that Davidson is to be assessed on mental health grounds, The Daily Telegraph reports.

Police cordoned off a crime scene yesterday morning and a knife was found nearby before it was seized. Forensic examination will be conducted at the crime scene.

Earlier, NSW Chief Inspector Michael Wurth described the scene as ‘traumatic’.

Chief Inspector Wurth said officers had felt a sense of urgency when they saw the reportedly bloodied man.

He also revealed that the pair are local Gunnedah residents.

“We believe the man has been living at the caravan park for about two weeks, but the other person… lives separately in a house.”

A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
