Tom Kim’s brutal lipout on hole 72 ends with Ben An beating him in play-off in South Korea | Golf news and tour information

Two of South Korea’s biggest stars went head-to-head in their native country on Sunday. It ended in heartbreak for some and euphoria for others at the DP World Tour’s Genesis Championship at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club in Incheon.

Ben An, 33, was looking for his first on the tour in more than nine years and first victory since February 2022 on the Korn Ferry Tour. He faced Tom Kim, the 22-year-old who had already won three times on the PGA Tour but had not yet won the title on the European Tour.

The match ended with Kim having to make an 8-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th hole for the win. He took a step as the ball trickled towards the cup, but it came out painfully and Kim could only stare in disbelief.

A birdie completed four of the last six holes and headed to a playoff with Kim. Both men shot a final round of five-under 67 and were tied at a total of 17 under par.

The play-off didn’t last long as it was An who birdied the same 18th hole that just cost Kim the tournament, capturing his first DP World Tour title since the BMW PGA Championship in May 2015.

“It’s great, obviously I’ve had a great season, it’s been too long (to win) on the main tour,” An said. “All I was trying to do is show great golf for the home fans. It’s been a while since I played for them.

“It feels great, it’s a bit of a shame that Tom had a bit of a mess there, but it was a great tournament for me, I really enjoyed it.”

There were two bogeys for An in the final round, but they were compensated by the seven birdies. Kim made most of his score on the first 14 holes, making six birdies and a bogey during that stretch, but parried the final four holes.

It was an emotional victory for An as he was seen in tears afterwards as he was able to win in front of his family. This embrace with his grandmother was a particularly wonderful moment.

“There were a lot of fans supporting me, and Tom and I feel like we had a great battle today. I just felt a bit lucky to come out on top today, I guess,” he said.

“It’s a nice ending to this year, it’s been a great year. This feels great, I’m going to enjoy it for a while and then I have to get back to it.”
