William “Bill” Beavers died Saturday morning of natural complications surrounded by family, a family spokesperson said.

Beavers served as alderman for Chicago’s 7th Ward from 1983 to 2006. He was then elected Cook County Commissioner for the 4th District from 2006 to 2013.

“Bill Beavers will go down in history as one of the most progressive African-American councilors on the Chicago City Council. He was unapologetically black and proved it through his numerous efforts to get black business people involved in city business and contracts,” said publicist Sean. Howard.
