MELBOURNE – A 19-year-old Melbourne woman involved in a traffic accident on Interstate 95 in Melbourne was killed early Saturday after she got out of her sedan and was struck by several other vehicles.

The fatal crash happened just after midnight Saturday as the woman was driving in the southbound lanes of I-95 near the Pineda Causeway exit, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.

Witnesses told officers the unidentified woman was driving a 2010 Lexus over the speed limit while in traffic on the dark highway. Troopers said the woman’s car contained three passengers from Melbourne: a 16-year-old boy, a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old woman.

The 19-year-old failed to stop in front of a tractor-trailer and struck the vehicle from behind, troopers reported. The Lexus turned on the highway and came to a stop in the outside lane of the highway. The woman then got out of the Lexus and was struck by a Ford F-150. The pickup left the road and struck a light pole on the right side, police said.

Another vehicle, a 2023 Toyota Camry traveling southbound, then ran over the 19-year-old as she lay on the highway, FHP reported. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the Lexus suffered minor injuries, while the others at the crash site refused medical treatment.
