UN chief Antonio Guterres has said he is “shocked by the dire numbers of deaths, injuries and destruction” in northern Gaza, where Israel has launched a new attack that he says is aimed at preventing Hamas from recovering.

A statement from the Secretary-General’s spokesman said “repeated attempts” to deliver “essential” humanitarian supplies were denied by Israeli authorities.

Mr. Guterres warns that “widespread destruction and deprivation” as a result of the Israeli offensive “makes living conditions for the Palestinian population there untenable,” the statement said.

“This conflict continues to be waged with little regard for the requirements of international humanitarian law,” the report continued.

All parties must “respect and protect civilians” and ensure that humanitarian efforts are not hampered, Guterres said.
