The Macon County community in Little Texas is receiving a “safe room” grant

LITTLE TEXAS, Ala. (W.S.F.A) – Little Texas is about to get a little safer.

The community’s volunteer fire department has received a grant worth more than $100,000 from FEMA to build a natural disaster safe area.

According to the approval letter, the room will be 7 meters long, 3 meters wide and 2.5 meters high.

It’s a safety measure that hits close to home, just like the nearby community of 2019 Beauregard was hit by an EF-4 tornado that killed several people.

“If those people in Beauregard would have had something like this when we come, it would have saved a lot of lives,” said fire brigade manager Dr. Willie Kirk, Jr. “The safehouse would accommodate 48 people with two disabilities. there, plus a toilet.”

The safe room is secured with a combination lock, allowing all firefighters to open the room at any time, rather than having to search for a key during an emergency.

Work will begin once Macon County officials approve the project and a bid is accepted.
