A Bexar County sheriff’s deputy intervenes in an inmate’s suicide attempt while conducting a check

An apparent suicide attempt by an inmate was intervened by a deputy, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said.

The incident happened Sunday at the Bexar County Jail building at 5:10 p.m.

According to a BCSO statement, a deputy intervened in the suicide attempt of a 27-year-old woman while she was conducting a personal observation check. The deputy last saw the inmate at 4:45 p.m. and noted no signs of mental distress.

The deputy immediately entered the cell, called for emergency assistance, began using her cutting tool intended for suicide attempts, and initiated life-saving measures.

First responders from the San Antonio Fire Department and additional facility personnel also responded to the incident.

The inmate was transported to University Hospital for further treatment and was responsive at the time. The BCSO Internal Affairs Unit is currently investigating the incident.

The inmate was booked into the Bexar County Jail on June 24, 2024, on charges of assault and harassment of a public servant.
