A man has been charged with burglary after ‘high-end diamond jewellery’ was stolen from a shop in Guernsey.

Police said the man was arrested at Guernsey Airport while trying to board a flight.

Guernsey Police said they accelerated their investigation and found the stolen items in a plane’s luggage.

Officers were called to the store in St Peter Port at 11.20am BST on Saturday. They added that the arrested man would appear in court later.

Stolen items recovered

Police said: “A man was arrested on suspicion of breaking into the departure lounge at Guernsey Airport as he attempted to board the 1pm Aurigny flight to London Gatwick.

“Police officers boarded the aircraft following the arrest to ensure that no other passengers were associated with groups seen near the location of the offense and to collect the arrested man’s luggage who was already on board.

“The stolen items were found in the luggage that was on the plane.”

Police said the investigation and subsequent search delayed the plane by about 20 minutes.
