Former President Donald Trump and running mate Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, met with the family of the U.S. Marine veteran who was killed along a Mexican highway earlier this month by suspects believed to be cartel members.

Nicholas Douglas Quets, a 31-year-old Navy veteran who worked for Pima County, Arizona on water reclamation projects, was shot and killed on October 19 along the Caborca-Altar Highway in northern Mexico.

His family said Quets drove to Rocky Point with friends for a beach trip. The shooting took place about 30 miles south of the US-Mexico border.

The Sonora attorney general’s office said a vehicle pulled up next to Quets’ pickup and opened fire in a “direct attack,” according to KVOA. An armed group had tried to stop Quets’ truck at an illegal checkpoint and followed them when they did not stop, a Sonora official confirmed to Tucson.com.

Quets’ father said the family has not heard from elected officials in the Biden-Harris administration.

“Over the next few weeks, we all need to put pressure on the cartels that murdered this innocent, young Marine and try to put pressure on Kamala Harris to do something about it,” Vance told the crowd.

“Here is my solemn pledge to you as you have been ignored by your own government for the past four days, in the midst of this incredible tragedy,” Vance said. “I promise you, the cavalry is coming, and when Donald Trump is president, we’re going to kick the cartels and we’re going to do it for you and for everyone in this room.”
