The coroner has identified the driver of a NAPA Auto Parts van who died after running into an intersection on a red light, causing a three-vehicle crash in Libertyville.

An autopsy performed Monday revealed that Neal Raffeld, 77, of Mundelein, died of blunt force injuries resulting from a car accident, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.

Libertyville Police and the Libertyville Fire Department responded to the intersection of Winchester Road and Butterfield Road in Libertyville around 11:46 a.m. Friday.

Libertyville Police Sergeant Dusan Racic said officers received a report of a multi-vehicle crash with injuries.

Officers arrived at the scene to find a crash involving a Chevrolet SUV, a NAPA Auto Parts van and a UPS box truck.

The van suffered heavy damage after appearing to be hit by the UPS truck.

Libertyville Deputy Police Chief Matt Goze said Saturday that Raffeld, the driver of the NAPA van, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Raffeld was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was called to the scene to conduct a full accident investigation.

The intersection of Butterfield Road and Winchester Road has been completely closed for several hours. It remained closed until 4pm

Banek said the preliminary investigation shows the NAPA van driven by Raffeld was stopped at the traffic light.

The van drove into the intersection against a red light for an unknown reason and was struck by the UPS truck, Banek said. The two vehicles then collided with the SUV.

The crash remains under investigation by Libertyville Police and MCAT.
