Suspect in deadly East Nashville attack surrenders to Metro Police

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A man wanted in connection with a deadly attack in East Nashville has surrendered to Metro Nashville Police (MNPD), authorities said.

Clifford Jones Jr., 35, surrendered on an outstanding murder warrant. The MNPD said the warrant was issued in connection with the fatal attack on 59-year-old James Sutton.

Police added that Jones was identified as a suspect during the course of an investigation and was confirmed by surveillance footage that showed Jones visiting an auto shop wearing the same clothing as before the deadly attack.

According to an initial report on the incident, officers were called to the scene to respond to what was believed to be a collision. However, according to police, further investigation revealed that it was a murder.

Surveillance footage also showed Sutton was pushed to the ground during a physical altercation. Sutton was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he died, according to MNPD. Authorities added that the investigation confirmed that Sutton was never struck by a vehicle.

According to the MNPD, Jones’ bond was set at $40,000.
