Insight into the security arrangements of Pinarayi Vijayan, Kerala CM, Convoy Accident, Thiruvananthapuram, pinarayi vijayan, tailgating, VIP security, traffic

IIt is very common to see a large convoy of security vehicles escorting a service vehicle carrying a leader or government figure. In the United States, for example, the president’s convoy is so sophisticated that it is almost impossible for anyone to breach security or get close to the presidential vehicle. This level of protection also applies to world leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Recently, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s convoy made headlines after it was involved in an accident, sparking renewed interest in the safety features and arrangements offered to such leading figures.

When the Chief Minister’s vehicle passes through the city of Thiruvananthapuram, it is usually accompanied by a standard convoy of four vehicles, including escort and pilot cars. However, additional police vehicles often join the convoy. When traveling out of town, an additional pilot vehicle, ambulance and local police vehicles are usually also included.

During the accident in Vamanapuram, an area within the jurisdiction of Venjaramoodu police station, an ambulance and a regional pilot car were part of the convoy. In this accident, five vehicles of the CM’s convoy collided one by one. It is believed that the pilot car’s sudden braking led to the collision.

It will also be investigated whether there was negligence on the part of the driver of the vehicle after the pilot. Thiruvananthapuram Range DIG Ajeetha Begum has directed Rural SP Kiran Narayanan to submit a report on the Vamanapuram accident. Further measures will be taken after reviewing this report.

The Prime Minister’s convoy incident took place yesterday. The Chief Minister’s vehicle was also hit in the accident. Five vehicles were involved, including the chief minister’s car and escort vehicles. The crash occurred when the pilot vehicle braked to avoid hitting a scooter rider who was attempting to turn right.

  • Tailgating: The convoy exhibited tailgating, a dangerous driving practice in which each vehicle follows the vehicle in front with minimal distance. The rule is to maintain sufficient distance to be able to stop safely if the vehicle in front suddenly brakes.
  • Speed rules: Convoys are expected to follow a fixed speed without abrupt accelerations or decelerations. However, this directive was not adhered to by the Chief Minister’s convoy.
  • Violation of lane markings: The accident site had double yellow lines, similar to a dividing line, indicating a prohibited zone. Yet the convoy completely crossed this line.

Are VIPs exempt?

VIP convoys are subject to traffic regulations, including rules regarding yellow lines and red lights. However, security personnel have the authority to circumvent these rules if necessary for security reasons. The permission given to VIP vehicles by bypassing signal lights is based on safety concerns.
