SOMERS, Westchester County (WABC) — The suspect accused in a fatal shooting at a Westchester apartment complex has been arrested and charged with murder after a manhunt forced the closure of schools and a shelter on site.

Fernando Jimenez, 40, is accused of shooting his girlfriend and her two sons in an apartment behind Crossroads Plaza on Route 6 in Somers.

The victims were found in the home. Sources tell Eyewitness News the two minors were boys – a 10th grader and an 8th grader.

Two of the victims were rushed to Westchester Medical Center and a third to New York Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital.

The Grade 10 student was pronounced dead at the hospital and the Grade 8 student is in critical condition. The mother is said to be stable.

Jiminez was taken into custody just before 11 a.m. Tuesday. He is not the boys’ father.

He was arraigned Tuesday evening and charged with second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.

New York State Police issued orders for residents of Westchester County and schools in the Putnam Valley district to be closed for the day as they searched for the gunman.

The Somers Central School District said in a post on its website that it canceled all after-school activities on Tuesday “in light of the tragic incident that has affected our community. While our schools are safe, given the severity of the situation and out of respect for the family, we have chosen to cancel all after-school activities.”

The motive behind the shooting also remains questionable as New York State Police are leading the investigation.
