Man jailed for drunkenly crashing into Checkers gate

The court heard Wootten was driving along Missenden Road, Aylesbury, when instead of going around the bend in the road he drove straight ahead and crashed into the 80-year-old oak fences.

The incident caused significant damage to the gates and serious injuries to Wootten.

Several cans of alcohol were found in his white Volkswagen Scirocco, the court also heard.

He had a blood alcohol content of 221 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood. The legal alcohol limit for drivers in England is 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood.

Celia Mardon, of the Crown Prosecution Service for Thames and Chiltern, said: “CCTV footage showed Wootten driving at high speed towards the gates of the Checkers estate.

“The strength of this evidence, together with a significantly high blood alcohol reading, left him little choice but to admit his guilt to the charges we authorized against him.

“Wootten not only caused significant damage to the Victory Gate, but his reckless driving could also have endangered the lives of others.”
