Yankees fan ejected for prying ball out of Mookie Betts’ glove: ‘We’re going ‘D’-up’

Two fans were ejected from Yankee Stadium after one of them during Game 4 of the World Series tried to pry a foul ball out of Mookie Betts’ glove.

It was a bizarre player-fan interaction rarely seen during a game, let alone a championship series. It happened in the first inning when Betts jumped to the wall in foul territory and initially caught Gleyber Torres’ pop-up.

But a lover identified by ESPN as Austin Capobianco, inexplicably grabbed Betts’ glove with both hands and pulled the ball out. Capobianco’s friend, John Peter, then grabbed Betts’ hand without gloves.

Betts reacted with disgust, but it quickly turned to joy when Torres was ejected for fan interference.

“He won’t see the game much longer,” Fox analyst John Smoltz said on air. He was right.

The fans were later escorted away from their front row seats by security, to applause and cheers from the Yankee faithful, who also booed security.

And apparently the duo of season ticket holders have been discussing the scenario for a long time.

“We always joke about the ball around us,” Capobianco told ESPN. “We are not going to go out of our way to attack. If it’s in our area, we’ll go to ‘D’. “Someone defends, someone knocks the ball. We talk about it. We are willing to do this.”

The Dodgers led 2-0 at the time of the meeting, but New York ultimately won 11-4 to force a Game 5.

“I know when I’m wrong and as soon as I did it I was like, ‘Guys, I’m out,’” Capobianco told ESPN. “I patrol that wall and they know it.”

This marked the second time Torres had an at-bat affected by fan interference in this World Series, after it happened in the ninth inning of Game 1 at Dodger Stadium. In that case he received a double reward.

The good news for Capobianco and Peter? Apparently they will be allowed back to Yankee Stadium for Game 5 on Wednesday, they told ESPN.
