Andrea Mitchell asks Fred Upton who endorses George W. Bush

MSNBCs Andrea Mitchell spoke to former GOP congressman Fred Upton Wednesday about the impact of an endorsement like his — for the Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris – in his battleground state of Michigan. As they discussed cross-party expressions of support, she asked about a former president who remained silent.

At the end of their conversation Andrea Mitchell reportsMitchell asked Upton why former president George W Bush had publicly supported neither Harris nor the former president Donald Trump:

Mitchell: What about George W. Bush? President George H. W. BushBush 41, voted in favor Hillary Clintonmade it public. So, what do you think of George W. Bush’s silence despite what (Bush’s vice president) Dick Cheney, Liz Cheney and others like you have said?

Upton: Well, it’s a bit of being quiet and telling me who he’s probably going to vote for. But I think he decided to just sit on his hands, like (former vice president) Mike Pence. You know, it’s hard. I have to say, it’s hard. This is the first time I have ever voted for a Democrat for president. And of course I have split my ticket in the past. And I did it again, I voted absentee last week.

But it’s hard to support a presidential candidate on the other ticket, whether Republican or Democrat, depending on your point of view. It’s hard to do. And that’s why it’s really unprecedented now more than thirty former Republican members of Congress have said we have had enough. We must work together. And it will happen under a Harris administration and, frankly, probably not very likely under a Trump administration.
