Traffic, students affected by Peace River fire

People were asked to avoid the north side of Peace River on Wednesday due to a large building fire.

A fire broke out in the area of Avenue 77 on Wednesday afternoon.

An evacuation center was set up for evacuees at the Baytex Energy Center at 9810 73 Ave.

Students at Springfield Elementary School and Good Shepherd School were also affected.

The Peace River School Division’s transportation department said it was unable to get buses to Springfield Elementary School due to fire suppression.

Alternative arrangements were made for most students, but officials said all students who normally ride the bus to daycare had to be picked up by a parent.

There is no information on injuries resulting from the fire.

Peace River is located approximately 300 miles north of Edmonton.
