OPD: The ongoing massive drug trafficking investigation leads to another arrest and more charges

Another person from Owensboro has been arrested and more charges have been added to federal charges against several individuals involved in the massive drug trafficking investigation that led to several raids in August 2024. Large quantities of meth, cocaine, fentanyl pills and weapons were seized during the investigation.

The joint operation was conducted by the Owensboro Police Department, along with the DEA and the IRS. A federal grand jury in Louisville has indicted a total of 37 suspects – including many from Owensboro – from across Kentucky and California in five separate indictments involving methamphetamine, fentanyl and cocaine trafficking offenses and firearms offenses.

The investigation has continued and has resulted in another search warrant and arrest on federal drug charges.

On the morning of Oct. 30, OPD’s Emergency Response Team responded to a home in the 1400 block of Hall Street and took William Stewart, 51, of Owensboro, into custody, OPD said.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division and Street Crime Unit executed a search warrant and served a federal charging order against Stewart for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, according to a release.

In addition, several individuals from the August 2024 raids have had charges added to their federal charges, OPD officials said. This remains an ongoing and evolving investigation.

“To date, 96 separate federal charges have been filed, 280 pounds of methamphetamine, 26 pounds of cocaine, a large quantity of fentanyl pills, 34 weapons – including a fully automatic Glock – and $340,000 in cash have been seized,” OPD said . .
