Confusion and concern about Amendment 1

BECKLEY, WV (WV) – An amendment to the state constitution is on the line this Election Day.

Amendment 1 would amend the West Virginia Constitution to prohibit “the practice of medically assisted suicide, euthanasia, or the mercy killing of a person.”

Assisted suicide is suicide with the assistance of another person, especially the use of lethal drugs provided by a physician for this purpose by a patient with a terminal illness or incurable condition.

Many voters are confused and others are angry about Amendment 1.

Some believe this amendment would limit voters’ freedom by expanding the reach of government.

“Unfortunately, I think it’s quite confusing in terms of design. They didn’t put the actual wording of the amendment on the ballot, and it’s very confusing,” said Mike Pushkin, chairman of the West Virginia Democratic Party.

If you vote “yes” on this amendment, it means you want it to become law. If you vote “no” on this amendment, it means you do NOT want it to become law.

Pushkin says it is always important to know what is on your ballot.

Early voting is taking place

“It’s good to familiarize yourself with the ballot before you go in. I mean, we’ve had some issues in West Virginia where the wrong ballots have been entered, and it’s good for voters to recognize that. But to do that, you have to inform yourself about what should be on your ballot and certainly about this constitutional amendment before you vote,” Pushkin said.

Early voting started on October 23 and ends on November 2.
