Agatha has another shocking death throughout (and it’s more important than you think)

We have finally reached the end of The Witches’ Road, but at the end there was one more loss for the coven. Wednesday evening finale of two episodes of Agatha all the time was full of revelations about the Way, the witches on it, and even what the next step could be for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but all those revelations came at a price: another witch met her end, and this time it could have major consequences have to move forward. Warning: Spoilers for the finale of Agatha all the time beyond this point. Only read on if you really want to know.

Ultimately, Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) did not survive the adventure undertaken in the series, with the seemingly invincible and cunning witch ultimately being eliminated. However, it wasn’t the Way that killed Agatha, nor was it actually a failed process, or anything like that. Instead, Agatha willingly went to Death – and it turns out the end is just the beginning of the story for the legendary witch. Picks up after last week’s trial in which Lilia (Patti LuPone) sacrificed herself to put an end to the Salem SevenAgatha is on the road again and comes face to face with Rio (Aubrey Plaza), aka Death. It turns out that Agatha has been distracting Rio from Death’s real target this whole time: Billy (Joe Locke). It turns out that, according to Rio, Billy is an abomination who tampered with the “sacred balance.” by taking a second life and she must stop him from doing the same for Tommy. You see, it turns out Tommy hasn’t been reborn yet and Billy’s mission to find his brother is in trouble. Agatha eventually makes a deal with Rio: since Rio cannot kill Billy because he would simply reincarnate, he must voluntarily give himself up to Death. Agatha says she will persuade him to do so, but only if Rio stops chasing her. Rio agrees.

Agatha, Billy and Jen (Sasheer Zamata) continue their journey to the final trial, where Jen realizes that Agatha was the witch who tied her up and so Jen unties herself. But Agatha tells Billy about Tommy and the fact that he needs a body to get in, and during the final trial, Agatha guides Billy in finding a ship for Tommy, causing Billy to ‘complete’ his trial and disappear. Agatha eventually completes her trial as well, but she is confronted by Death, who is unhappy that Billy was not delivered to her. A fight ensues, Billy shows up – fully in his power – and helps Agatha by giving her some of his power. Agatha then appears to turn on Billy again and reveals her deal with Rio, but when Billy mentally contacts Agatha to ask if this is how her own son died, Agatha does something unexpected: she kisses Rio and it’s a literal Kiss of Death. Agatha dies and sacrifices herself for Billy.

But the story doesn’t end there. The series finale reveals that Billy comes to the realization that he created The Witches’ Road and that realization comes with a surprise visitor: Agatha, as a ghost. Agatha reveals that before Billy, the Way was actually just a myth, a lie, a scam that Agatha created centuries ago to kill witches and take their power. When Billy fully understands that manifesting the Road means killing Mrs. Hart, Alice, and Lilia, he becomes enraged and sets out to banish Agatha. However, he stops when Agatha’s ghost reveals why she doesn’t want to just go to the afterlife: she doesn’t want to face her son. It leads to a tender moment between Billy and Agatha, with Billy saying he thinks Nicholas will forgive her, but ultimately Agatha suggests that she and Billy would make a good team, with Agatha serving as a kind of mentor to Billy. The episode – and series – ends with Billy closing the road and Agatha announces “let’s go find Tommy” as the two head out into the world together.

It’s certainly an important development, not just because Agatha dies, but because Agatha (as a ghost) along with Billy sets in motion the possibility for Marvel, for the purpose of finding Tommy, to set up the Young Avengers or even take a adaptation of The Children’s Crusade in itself. It also makes Agatha more in line with her comic book counterpart, as she is now in a position to train Billy with his magic – in comics, Agatha trained Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in the art of magic. Now that Agatha has been redeemed to some extent, the possibilities are somewhat endless as to where the MCU can go with the character and it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
