Homeowners are opposing the development in East Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (W.S.F.A) – On Nov. 5, the Montgomery City Council will consider a rezoning proposal that could impact 3,000 residents.

Developers want the land at the corner of Ray Thorington Road and Pike Road to become a commercial development.

Residents have expressed their disapproval of commercial development in that area, with more than four homeowners associations calling on the Montgomery City Council to vote against it.

“If you bring an influx of traffic, if you bring an influx of crime, if you bring an influx of drainage issues – because there’s a whole new development going on now, those are all issues that need to be addressed to improve the value of real estate. for our residents,” said Aya Zaied, executive director of the Deer Creek Homeowners Association, “we will always be at the forefront of protecting those values and ensuring our residents’ voices are heard.”

Zaied said the development conflicts with the official Envision Montgomery 2040 plan, which she said calls for more green space.

“We want community centers, recreation and cultural arts – things that will benefit our community,” Zaied said.

WSFA 12 News is awaiting comment from District 8 Councilman Glen Pruitt for comment on whether he plans to vote for or against the rezoning.
