Couple arrested in WC for rape and human trafficking

File

Western Cape police arrested a couple in Melkbostrand on charges of rape and human trafficking.

The man and woman, aged 46 and 38, were arrested on Thursday by a multidisciplinary team, including officials from the Ministries of Social Development and Health.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Vukubi said the arrests came after the Hawks were alerted in October about a victim who had managed to escape her alleged traffickers.

He said the investigation revealed the woman was offered ‘an employment contract’ to work for the couple when they traveled abroad.

However, he said it is alleged the woman was raped and sexually exploited by her employers “not long after her arrival”.

“Several players, including other ministries and non-governmental organizations, were involved in the investigation into this matter.

“The address of the suspects was subsequently identified in Melkbosstrand,” Vukubi said.

He said the couple’s two young children have been transferred to the care of social workers from the Ministry of Social Development and will be taken for medical examination.

The man and woman will make their first appearance at the Atlantis Magistrates Court on Friday.
