Chicago Halloween Weather: AccuWeather Alert for isolated storm threat overnight, strong winds causing huge temperature drop

CHICAGO (WLS) — After a few days of unseasonably warm temperatures, Chicagoans can expect a big chill on Thursday as families prepare for Halloween trick-or-treating.

There is also a threat of isolated severe storms in parts of the area in the early hours of Thursday.

While morning showers dissipate before it’s time for trick-or-treating, a cold front is expected later in the day.

Temperatures will be in the 60s until 1 p.m. before dropping into the 40s after sunset, Mowry said.

A wind advisory is in effect until 10 p.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service said. Wind gusts could reach 50 miles per hour, Mowry said.

People in the Chicago area have been enjoying the warm weather, which has felt like a small resurgence of summer.

From the driving ranges to the bike paths, ABC7 saw people trying to make the most of this unusual heat on Wednesday.

People in the Chicago area have been enjoying the warm weather, which has felt like a small resurgence of summer.

It was a hat-less, glove-less day in Burnham Harbor for Megan Thomas as she enjoyed a bike ride along Chicago’s waterfront.

“We’re coming up on Halloween, and a few years ago it snowed, and I ride my bike in shorts, so I can’t complain,” Thomas said.

For a second day, autumn in the city felt more like a summer day. Tuesday’s high of 82 broke a record.

“I can’t complain,” said golfer John Anderson. ‘I like it so much, not too hot, cool. I like this weather. I can deal with this every day.”

The pleasant weather drove many golfers to the Jackson Park Golf Range.

“We’re currently stealing days in October and November,” said golfer Richard Tulloch. “We’re going to take them all while we can…we’re going to look at the leaves, tell stories and enjoy hitting balls.”

Despite the balmy temperatures, it’s time again when all boats, except those with late departure permits, must leave Chicago ports on October 31.

Tom Houston and his crew still have six boats in dry dock at their 134th and Indiana marine center.

“Usually it’s a lot colder, but the wind is just crazy today, so there’s not much else we can do today,” Houston said. “This one was hard enough to get on the trailer.”

While most were enjoying the unseasonably warm weather, knowing it might not last that long, Adam Bilter decided to make the most of it on a friend’s boat on the lake as he waits for the reality of fall and then the winter finally arrives.

“I already got the jerseys and gloves out and I’m ready to go,” Bilter said. “I’m done.”
