Mt. Healthy student had a gun loaded in his backpack at Jr./Sr. Secondary school

MOUNT HEALTHY, Ohio – A loaded handgun was found in a student’s backpack at Mt. Healthy Jr./Sr. High school on Thursday, according to the district.

According to a letter sent to families, school staff noticed “what appeared to be a vaping device” being exchanged between two students. The two students were taken to a secure office where their bags were searched by security personnel, per district procedure.

During that search, staff found a loaded firearm in one of the student’s bags.

“At no time was the weapon displayed or used to threaten anyone on campus,” the letter states.

The school called the Mt. Healthy Police Department, who responded to the school.

The district said the school was not placed on lockdown in any way, “as the situation was under control and did not pose an active threat.”

The district did not say what disciplinary action would be taken against the student who had the gun. The district did not report any interaction between the student and law enforcement.
