TOKYO – A recent series of robberies in the Tokyo area has led to growing interest in security glass and films, as attackers typically gain entry by smashing windows. Major domestic security companies in Japan have seen a significant increase in inquiries as a result.

More than ten robberies took place at homes in the Tokyo metropolitan area between August and October. The attackers used common methods such as breaking windows to enter houses and tying up residents with adhesive tape.

On October 24, the police had arrested more than thirty people between the ages of 10 and 40 on suspicion of involvement in the recurring crimes. Research found that suspects on social media were lured by tempting offers such as high pay and “white” gigs, as opposed to “black” companies that force employees to work under harsh conditions, only to become involved in crimes called “shady part-time” are mentioned. jobs.”

The major security company Secom Co. sells safety glass designed to withstand the impact of large tools such as pry bars, as well as security films that prevent the penetration of objects. The number of questions to the company increased forty times in October compared to the same period last year.

There has also been increased interest in home security systems, where sensors around windows and doors can detect anomalies and alert security personnel. A spokesperson for the company noted that “many inquiries come from individuals living in detached homes”, with a notable trend among customers reassessing and considering their use of security equipment to improve the security of their home.

Similarly, security giant Sohgo Security Services Co. (ALSOK) consulted by an increasing number of customers about security products and services. According to a company spokesperson, many questions stem from safety concerns from single elderly parents, or from former customers who want to reactivate their security services.

Hiroaki Hamada, a researcher at the Secom Intelligent Systems Laboratory who is familiar with residential crime prevention measures, called on people to be on their guard, saying: “It is also important to buy time to call the police if robbers approach you enter the house. The simplest and cheapest measure is to lock (your doors and windows).”
