Retailleau said he would later travel to the northwestern city of Rennes, where local media said a 5-year-old boy was shot in the head in another drug-related incident last week.

In his interview, Retailleau condemned what he called the “Mexicanization” of France.

“These shootings are not taking place in South America, but in Rennes, Poitiers, in the west of France that was once known for its tranquility. We are at a tipping point,” he said.

France has suffered an increase in drug-related crime in recent years in Marseille, the historic center of the illicit narcotics trade, and in small and medium-sized towns across the country.
