3 opportunities for development in the tropics

3 opportunities for development in the tropics

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – You might look at the tropics and think it’s August. We are currently monitoring three areas for potential tropical development in the final month of the hurricane season.

SOUTHWEST CARIBBEAN SEA

A broad area of low pressure is likely to develop over the southwestern Caribbean Sea in the coming days. Gradual development is possible thereafter, and a tropical depression is likely to form late this weekend or early next week as the system drifts generally northward or northwestward over the central or western Caribbean Sea. Regardless of development, locally heavy rainfall is possible over parts of the adjacent land areas of the western Caribbean. The probability of development is 70%.

This system currently poses no threat to the US. We will continue to watch and wait for this system to form.

NORTHEAST CARIBBEAN AND GREATER ANTILLES

A low-pressure trough near Puerto Rico is producing a large area of showers and thunderstorms over parts of the Greater Antilles and adjacent waters of the Atlantic Ocean and northeastern Caribbean. Slow development of this system is possible over the next few days as it moves west-northwestward toward the Greater Antilles. After that time, this system is expected to be incorporated into the low-pressure area over the Caribbean. Regardless of the development, locally heavy rain showers are possible in the coming days from the northern Leeward Islands westward across Puerto Rico and Hispaniola into eastern Cuba and the southeastern Bahamas. The probability of development is 10%.

NORTH ATLANTIC ATLANTIC

A storm-force non-tropical low-pressure area about 400 miles west of the western Azores is producing limited showers. Some subtropical development is possible, while low temperatures generally move eastward over the next few days. Additional information about this system is available in High Seas Forecasts issued by the National Weather Service. The probability of development is 10%.
