Iowa City High junior Siena Brown is the Press-Citizen Student of the Week

Siena Brown, a junior at Iowa City High School, is the Press-Citizen’s newest Student of the Week.

Brown received 63.4% of the 516 votes.

Brown is a dedicated student leader. She is actively involved in the environmental club and has served as co-president for the past two years, where she helped lead a project to compost food waste in the high school cafeteria. Brown is also vice president of The Golden Beaker, a nonprofit student organization that raises money for low-income elementary schools to purchase STEM supplies. She will give a presentation Friday at the World Food Prize Youth Institute in Des Moines, where she will interact with students and world leaders about food security.

“(Brown) is a dedicated student, a great student leader and a caring individual,” said Mary Lestina, science teacher at City High.

This week’s Student of the Week poll closed on Thursday, October 31. A new Student of the Week poll will go live on Monday, November 4.

Avery Riehl, Liberty City High School, Iowa

Avery Riehl is a senior at Iowa City Liberty High and excels in many facets. Riehl is editor-in-chief of Liberty’s online newspaper, The Live Wire, and was named an Emerging Journalist by the Iowa High School Press Association. Riehl and the Live Wire staff were recently named the IHSPA All-Iowa News Team of the Year. She plans to study journalism at university. Riehl is also active in the National Honor Society and serves as the lead tutoring coordinator.

Adam Wade, Clear Creek Amana High School

Adam Wade is a Clear Creek Amana High School senior who was nominated by faculty members Kelsey Portwine and Jackie Baxter. When the school needed a responsible and reliable student as a crossing guard to help children cross a highway, Wade rose to the occasion and, through his hard work and reliability, ensured that students got to school safely.

About Student of the Week

The Press-Citizen Student of the Week is a weekly competition during the academic year. The polling stations open on Monday and close on Thursday. Students from public and private high schools in the Iowa City area are eligible to participate.
