This is America’s favorite Thanksgiving side dish

There are so many classic dishes you can include when planning one Thanksgiving menu. There’s the roasted turkeyof course, which is traditionally the centerpiece of the meal. But in recent years, several studies have shown that the real stars of the show are actually the side dishes.

If you’re nodding like “duh, sure,” you’re not alone. In fact, 56% of consumers say they prefer the Thanksgiving side dishes then the turkey! That is according to Campbell’s The 2024 State of the Sides report was just released and is a survey of 5,000 American adults in all 50 states.

But here’s where it gets even more interesting! Campbell’s then asked respondents to vote for their favorite classic side dish. Options included green bean casserole, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, filling/dressingAnd sweet potatoes. That is an elite competition, but one dish dominates.

The #1 Thanksgiving side dish in America is…drumroll, please…stuffing/dressing!

That’s right! Mashed potatoes were dethroned this year, with approval from all age groups, from the Silent Generation to Gen Z. The report did not address the more controversial question of whether or not to stuff the bird, nor whether to give it a give name filling versus dressing. But 60% of respondents all agreed that making side dishes is more fun than roasting the turkey.

The most important thing, of course, is coming together in the kitchen to cook and around the table to enjoy with the people you care about. In fact, the report shows that 99% of Americans participate in Thanksgiving preparation in some capacity. So it really is a group effort, regardless of what you prefer to do. And that is certainly something to be grateful for!
