Newsweek reached for ICE for comment via email Friday afternoon.

Nassau County officials said at a briefing Friday that current border policies had made this possible, despite his entry into the country a decade ago.

“As we’ve seen too many times, these illegal immigrants have come here and committed very serious crimes, and they didn’t have to happen.” Republican Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said during Friday’s briefing.

“Nassau County is not a sanctuary, and for good reason, because we are trying to keep out illegal immigrants who have not been vetted,” Blakeman added. “We don’t know who they are. We don’t know where they come from. We don’t know if they have a criminal record.”

ICE regularly releases detainees for illegal immigrants accused of other crimes. This allows the agency to take individuals into custody as soon as local police release them.

Diaz was arraigned on October 23 and was held in the Nassau County Jail on $200,000 bail. Police are asking anyone who believes they are a victim of Diaz to come forward.
