Orlando reveler describes ‘panic and terror’ after deadly shooting at Halloween party: ‘I didn’t want to die that way’

Chaos ensued in downtown Orlando when a A 17-year-old gunman allegedly opened fire during a Halloween party early Friday — and many partygoers were terrified they would be killed in the attack.

“It was the most scared I’ve ever been,” Joey Herrera, 22, who was at the party with his girlfriend and some other friends, told The Post.

“I was afraid I was going to be killed, and I didn’t want to die that way.”

At the Mondrian Apartments, a luxury high-rise just steps from the revelry, terrified partygoers huddled in the lobby as police cars zoomed past. The complex, usually closed to non-residents, opened its doors to those fleeing to safety.

“It was chaos, panic and terror,” said a receptionist. “The scariest thing I can remember.”

Suspected teenage gunman Jaylen Dwayne Edgar is seen walking through busy streets in a yellow shirt and backpack before he started shooting, sending costumed partygoers fleeing for their lives, according to a harrowing video released Friday by the Orlando Police Department.

At least two people were killed and six others were injured in the mass shooting, police said.

Edgar allegedly tried to flee the scene, but a police officer who saw him pull the trigger immediately knocked him to the ground single-handedly before three other officers charged him.

During an early morning news conference, Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith said Florida’s new constitutional carry law has changed the way officers keep the area safe.

“We used to do closings, and we had the dogs and everything,” Smith said. “That all disappeared when the law changed, and basically you can carry a gun on the street as long as you meet certain criteria. So when that changed, we can’t do that anymore.”

“We could no longer do the dogs we had in town,” Smith continued.

‘We are working with the city and with the clubs in the center to find out if there is anything else we can do to keep it safe there. With so many people down there, we have no idea what people are carrying.”

A motive has not yet been revealed and the names of the victims have not yet been released. It is unclear whether Edgar has hired an attorney authorized to speak on his behalf.
