Randolph County Office of Emergency Management announces Elkins Middle will be closed “until further notice.”

ELKINS, W.Va. (WBOY) – The Randolph County Office of Emergency Management has provided more information about the current investigation into air quality concerns at Elkins Middle School.

The release, posted on the Elkins City Hall Facebook pagestates that initial results of air quality testing at the school have not shown elevated levels of carbon monoxide and that additional monitoring and analysis is underway.

“Randolph County Emergency Management is receiving active assistance from the West Virginia Department of Health (WVDH), Environmental Protection Agency Mid-Atlantic Region (EPA), West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP), West Virginia Center for Threat Preparedness, local health care departments and surrounding hospitals,” the release said. “These agencies coordinate resources through an incident command structure led by Randolph County Emergency Management to ensure a comprehensive response.”

The press release also provides information about what exactly the agencies mentioned do to promote research.

“The EPA Emergency Response Team arrived Thursday and deployed laboratory-grade equipment to assess potential sources of exposure. The West Virginia Bureau for Public Health (WVBPH) and the Center for Threat Preparedness are evaluating factors contributing to the reported symptoms. The WVBPH conducts syndromic surveillance – or the state of health-related data – in collaboration with local health departments and hospitals.”

The release ends by urging residents to report any unusual symptoms to their healthcare providers, and announcing that Elkins Middle School is “closed until further notice” as a precaution.

Elkins High School originally closed on Friday, October 25 due to air and water issues after students were treated for carbon monoxide symptoms the day before. Students returned to school on Monday and were told they would Stay online for the rest of the week. The school district announced Friday that Remote learning will continue on Monday, November 4.
