UAW President Shawn Fain rallies in Detroit for Kamala Harris in the final push before Election Day

UAW President Shawn Fain and union members met with local lawmakers in Detroit on Friday in hopes of winning the vote.

Fain says the upcoming elections will define this generation. He spoke to a crowd of hundreds of people at the union’s Solidarity House.

“It is the working class that built this country. And if we defeat Donald Trump on Tuesday and deal another blow to the billionaire class, it will be because you won that victory,” Fain told the crowd. “In the UAW and in our labor movement, our response to hate and division is simple; our answer is solidarity. If we stick together, we will never lose.”

It was a who’s who of the Democratic Party as lawmakers took the stage for a final round of voting before some 370,000 active UAW members.

Meanwhile, a familiar face from the Bronx was the evening’s keynote. Very progressive Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was in town and urged voters to go to the polls. During her visit, she took time to address former President Donald Trump’s pointed comments about Detroit in October.

“We heard it from Trump saying, oh what’s going to happen, the world is going to look like Detroit? Yes,” AOC said. “I would love to be a place that has the strongest, most fighting union in the United States of America.”

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson spoke with a large UAW badge on her blazer. She delivered a message not to let any form of intimidation or fear-mongering prevent anyone from casting their vote on Tuesday. We assure once again that a fair election will take place in Michigan, with all eyes of the country and even the world watching.

“This week alone has been filled with so much mudslinging and misinformation, all designed to discourage us from participating or believing in our own voices,” Benson said. “We will stand up to anyone, anywhere, who tries to stand in the way of our rights and freedoms.”

Representatives Debbie Dingell and Rashida Tlaib were in attendance. Tlaib would not endorse Kamala Harris at the rally, instead telling voters to focus on all races, not just the presidential election.
