A lion that recently roamed the Mbombela area has been captured.

The big cat recently had area residents on high alert after the news broke he was seen nearby The Residual Estate.

Joggers, walkers and cyclists in particular were all on high alert after the news.

Lion bolted and was captured

The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) has the lion confirmed this was successfully captured at 2 a.m. on November 2.

“The lion was shot and captured near the Sekelbos estate in Mbombela,” MTPA spokesperson Simphiwe Shungube said.

The Nelspruit Concerned Citizens (NCC) also took to social media to show appreciation for everyone involved in the successful arrest.

They shared a photo of the escaped lion so residents could see that the big cat was unharmed.

Social media happy that lion was not injured

Those taking to social media thanked everyone involved for not hurting the lion, while others joked about its presence so close to their home.

One man reflected on the photo of the darting lion and said it looked like he was carrying rugby clothing.

Willem Stapelberg joked:

“Did the lion play lock because he still has his scrumpet on?”

Mercia Saayman said:

‘I bet there have been fewer burglaries this week.’

Edward Dyssel added:

‘I’m going to cut the fence somewhere; this kept my week exciting.”

Lion sits on man’s lap

In a now viral video, the man shows off a huge lion on his lap, and South Africans can’t understand what they saw.

The video broke the internet and was viewed more than 7 million times people and noticed how the lion relaxed on him as he brushed him.
