Kentucky nonprofit is helping people affected by Hurricane Helene in East TN

JESSAMINE COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — On Saturday, people in Jessamine County had the chance to meet first responders who are helping people still recovering from Hurricane Helene more than a month later.

Kentucky Serves is a nonprofit organization that raises money for affected areas in East Tennessee.

“We like to give back to the community and help where it’s needed,” said Vice President Brian Butler. “Right now we’re being called to go to East Tennessee.”

Emergency workers from the area attended the fundraiser. They even brought an armored truck and a helicopter.

“It is imperative for us to always lend a helping hand to other states and provinces as they need our assistance,” said Public Affairs Officer Trooper Justin Kearney. “We are beyond happy to be here today and are truly grateful for the support the community has shown us so far.”

Butler said anyone willing to help with Helene’s recovery makes a big difference.

“We saw it firsthand.” said Butler, “It’s like any flood. You drive and you don’t see anything. You get close to the waterway. Then it’s like you’re in a third world country, full of destruction and devastation.”

The ruins left by Helene make Butler think about what would happen if something like Helene struck his house.

“Would I just be left alone, or would someone come? I can step back and see that there is such a need,” Butler said.

Butler’s passion is helping others, and running Kentucky Serves is just one of the ways he can do his part.

“This gives us the opportunity not to reject people. We can accept them as they are, help them and be an outstretched hand.”

One way they are reaching out is by finding volunteers to help them rebuild the homes of people destroyed by Hurricane Helene. Visit their website at for more information.
