Columbus police officer dies after off-duty incident

COLUMBUS, OH (WCMH) – A Columbus police officer has been killed in what is being called an off-duty incident.

Brian Steel, the president of the local Fraternal Order of Police chapter that represents the CPD, announced the death of one of its members on Saturday. He called the officer, whose name has not been released, a “valued friend, colleague and public servant whose absence will be deeply felt.”

The suspected man with a gun held at Capital University was holding a cell phone

“This officer, whose life was dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of others, leaves behind a loving family and countless colleagues who will remember him for his dedication, integrity and devotion to duty,” Steel said. “His passing is a profound loss to our Lodge, to the Columbus Police family and to the residents whose lives he worked to protect every day.”

Steel asked that the family’s privacy be respected during their time of grief. He said further details will be provided on memorial arrangements as they become available.
