Karun Chandhok warns Franco Colapinto of ‘career-damaging’ move in 2025 after Sao Paulo Grand Prix crash

Williams Racing driver Franco Colapinto had a qualifying session to forget ahead of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

Conditions at Interlagos were treacherous heading into the sixth Sunday qualifying session in Formula 1 history, after conditions at Grand Prix of São Paulo were too wet to race after the Sprint Race.

It meant a 7.30am local time start for the teams and media in the paddock and the drivers had to rely entirely on the wet tires during Q1.

Valtteri Bottas experimented with trying out the intermediate tires – and spun briefly as a result – and Oscar Piastri was the first driver to set a competitive lap on the inters in Q2, conditions were exceptionally tricky throughout.

Williams Director Franco Colapinto found out the hard way how difficult Formula 1 racing on a rain-soaked track can be.

The 21-year-old’s crash out of turn three raised red flags that disrupted an already delayed session.

Karun Chandhok was speaking Sky Sports F1 about the Argentinian and his future after this season.

Colapinto has been linked with a move to Red Bullbut Chandhok now believes it could have a damaging effect on his F1 career if he is promoted to a top team too early.

Despite some very impressive performances, he is still prone to making mistakes and was slower than teammate Alex Albon both in Brazil and the previous race in Mexico City.

Colapinto took a normal line through turn one before having to correct the rear of his car as he stepped out exiting turn two.

However, a temporary loss of control during the long left turn in turn three saw Colapinto hydroplane into the barriers on the outside of the corner.

Reflecting on Colapinto’s crash and his future, Chandhok said: “He has been a great example to everyone of how first impressions count in any job.

“He came with a bang, didn’t he? A great first few races, but as you get into it now you see in Mexico he was quite behind Albon’s time, in the sprint qualifying on Friday, again well behind Albon’s time.

“There are a lot of rumors about him going straight into Red Bull, and there’s a lot of excitement about him straight into Red Bull.

“I think for someone so young and inexperienced to drop him straight into the Red Bull next to Max Verstappen could be detrimental to his career.

“He’s obviously very talented and obviously very fast, but you can’t just gain experience and I wonder if he would be better off waiting in the RB for a while and then maybe moving into a Red Bull later.”

Helmut Marko is concerned about Franco Colapinto ahead of the Red Bull rumors

Colapinto must wait nervously to find out whether Williams can repair his car in time to compete in Sunday’s Grand Prix.

He has a lot of work to do to add to his five points in the Drivers’ Championship as he will start 18th as long as he doesn’t receive penalty points for replacing parts of his car after his crash.
